Girl run over in Chorleywood

A 17-year-old girl is seriously ill after being involved in an accident with a van this morning as she crossed Rickmansworth Road, near St Clement Danes School.

Police say the accident happened at around 8.25am this morning as rush hour traffic reached its peak.

The girl, believed to be a pupil at the school, was rushed to Watford General Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

The vehicle involved was a white Renault Kangoo van.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact PC Alison Hickman of the Western Area Roads Policing Unit of 07923 472 388.

The road remains closed from the junction with Common Road. Traffic towards the M25 is being diverted through the centre of Chorleywood.

LinuxWorld: Linux provides many benefits other than cost-cutting, says ...

Insurance and financial services giant Nationwide, for example, has combined Linux and virtualization to streamline its data center environment, a move that is expected to result in $15 million in savings during the next three years.

"But cost cutting isn't the only thing we're after," says Guru Vasudeva, associate vice president and chief architect at Nationwide, based in Columbus, Ohio. "Delivering capabilities faster is what we're after."

Vasudeva was one of three CIOs who discussed their use of open source software and answered questions from a handful of peers. Curtis Edge, CIO at Boston-based The Christian Science Monitor and Michael Gallagher, global manager of enterprise architecture at ABN Amro, based in Amsterdam, joined Vasudeva during the 75-minute panel discussion.

Welcoming Baylor

It's 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and I'm in the middle of watching Iowa State at Kansas in ESPN's prime slot. It makes sense that the nation's No. 2-ranked team is being showcased here. To catch the tip of Memphis at Tulsa, I have to flip 429 channels higher -- past ESPN's Full Court package -- to CSTV.

That's where the nation's No. 1 team is being shown as part of the network's contract with Conference USA; aside from Saturday's meeting with Gonzaga and the Feb. 23 showdown with Tennessee, channel No. 457 is where the Tigers' undefeated run will play out nationally, because of the Conference USA's deal with CSTV. Late in the broadcast, a story is told about how the coach of Memphis' latest victim, Tulsa's Doug Wojcik, was kind enough to text John Calipari to let him know that, if his plane landed in time, key Tigers recruit Xavier Henry was playing an hour and a half away in Oklahoma City.

About Adam Schein

Green Bay's run game has been anemic. McCarthy wants to establish balance. Favre needs it. Turnovers are often the result of when too much is on the shoulder of the quarterback.

"Any time you have a problem area you need to take as close a look as possible," McCarthy said. "We, as a coaching staff, need to be critical of ourselves. Maybe we are trying to put the players in a perfect play every time. Running the ball is about attitude, approach and fundamentals. What I am referring to schematically is more run-at runs. In our play book, that's runs you run against any defense, get a hat on a hat even if you don't have the best angle. We need to get back to getting down hill and stop trying to be so perfect."

And someone needs to emerge among Vernand Morency, DeShawn Wynn, Brandon Jackson and Ryan Grant.
